Nachtspektakel returns to Squaw

Tahoe’s finest gather for the 1st Annual Nachtspektakel.

The second annual Nachtspecktakl will be happening this Saturday, February 9th at Squaw Valley, starting at 3pm. Alpenglow Sports and Dynafit will be hosting a gathering of local backcountry skiers to share time on a skin track enroute to Squaw Valley’s High Camp for dinner and drinks followed by a night descent of Squaw’s notorious Mountain Run – sans crowds and with any luck, a fresh coat of snow.

Tickets for the event are $50 if purchased before the event, $60 at the event. Meet in front of Squaw’s Tram station to sign-in at 2:30pm. The hike to High Camp commences at 3pm TST (Tahoe Sharp Time, as in, really, we mean it, really, snooze you lose, loser). The first two drinks at High Camp are included, plus a three course meal.

All smiles halfway to High Camp.

What’s a Nachtspecktakl? Roughly translated it means a night spectacle – a European-style event that builds community by combining dining, drinking, and ski touring, three sports that mix together well, even in Amerika.

Last year Alpenglow Sports hosted the event with co-sponsor Dynafit. About 50 people showed up to participate in the first ever Nachtspektakel at Squaw Valley. Snow conditions were less than desireable but 50 people still attended to experience the novelty of the first ever sanctioned in-bounds public skinning event at Squaw. Beyond that it was a great opportunity to hang with Tahoe locals and talk smack while chewing half-cooked rice as a garnish to an otherwise decent salad.

Indeed, the only let down for the evening was the food. It was decent enough, but not for $50 of well earned turns. The Alpenglow crew did an excellent job of organizing the event, including the menu options. They were not, however, responsible for what came out of the kitchen. Hopefully the High Camp crew will recognize that pride in their product, or lack of it, will be on display to many more backcountry snobs this time around. Either that or they’ll increase the octane of the drinks. πŸ˜‰

Alpenglow will be offering FREE equipment rentals the day of the event. Rentals must be picked up by 1pm and can be returned at the end of the event or the following day in the store. Don’t forget a dry layer to change in to for dinner.
